Summary

"The Wonder Weeks。 How to stimulate your baby's mental development and help him turn his 10 predictable, great, fussy phases into magical leaps forward" describes in easy-to-understand terms the incredible developmental changes that all babies go through during the first 20 months of their lives。 This is the extended, "fat" edition with 2 more chapters covering 2 more leaps in the mental development of your baby up to the end of the sensorimotor period。

The book is based on the discovery of a little known phenomenon: all normal, healthy babies appear to be more tearful, troublesome, demanding and clingy at very nearly the same ages。

These age-related fluctuations in need for body contact and attention are related to major and quite dramatic changes in the brains of the children。 These changes enable a baby to enter a whole new perceptual world and, as a consequence, to learn many new skills。 This should be a reason for celebration, but as far as the baby is concerned these changes are bewildering。 He's taken aback -- everything has changed overnight。 It is as if he has woken up on a strange planet。

The book includes:

•  Week-by-week guide to baby's behavior

•  An explanation of the markers for cranky, clingy, crying (the three C's) behavior and how to deal with them

•  A description from your baby's perspective of the world around him and how you can understand the changes he's going through

•  Fun games and gentle activities you can do with your child

The book offers parents:

•  Support in times of trouble

•  Self-confidence

•  Help in understanding their baby

•  Hints on how to help their baby play and learn

•  A unique account of their baby's development

I recently became a father and this is the one thing that has been recommended to me the most。 It's a book (and also an app) describing the developmental leaps a baby goes through in the first 20 months of their life。 I'm not sure I'd recommend reading it in advance of becoming a parent, but it is very interesting when you have a baby there to observe。 I recently became a father and this is the one thing that has been recommended to me the most。 It's a book (and also an app) describing the developmental leaps a baby goes through in the first 20 months of their life。 I'm not sure I'd recommend reading it in advance of becoming a parent, but it is very interesting when you have a baby there to observe。 。。。more

I liked all the ideas of games to play with your baby and gaining understanding of the leaps。 Our little one certainly seems to follow them。

Incredibly helpful book! Every time my little boy was acting out of sorts I would check the calendar in this book and sure enough he would be heading into a “leap”!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 If you are about to become a new parent to a baby or find yourself parenting a baby right now I really really think you should check this book out。 A friend recommended it to me when I was pregnant and I’ve given it as a gift to all the new parents in my life since。 The format and writing does get repetitive in a really annoying way that makes it hard to focus (esp when the reader is sleep deprived and at their wits end due to their baby’s endless screaming and crying) HOWEVER this book puts int If you are about to become a new parent to a baby or find yourself parenting a baby right now I really really think you should check this book out。 A friend recommended it to me when I was pregnant and I’ve given it as a gift to all the new parents in my life since。 The format and writing does get repetitive in a really annoying way that makes it hard to focus (esp when the reader is sleep deprived and at their wits end due to their baby’s endless screaming and crying) HOWEVER this book puts into perspective the cause for their baby’s behaviour so parents can see the light at the end of the tunnel (Spoiler: it’s all a phase!) This book helped me survive those first months, understand my child better, and find new ways to have fun with the lil’ potato。 。。。more

I really like the concept and think it can be very helpful, especially for those who haven't been around kids, but even for experienced parents。 It's nice to be more in tune with what's likely going on and be able to adapt your care accordingly。 Also brings up aspects of development you might not have thought of or considered the impact of before。 Hopefully I'm able to read more of it if there's another child in my future。I read some of it but haven't finished, so my rating is probably unfair。 I I really like the concept and think it can be very helpful, especially for those who haven't been around kids, but even for experienced parents。 It's nice to be more in tune with what's likely going on and be able to adapt your care accordingly。 Also brings up aspects of development you might not have thought of or considered the impact of before。 Hopefully I'm able to read more of it if there's another child in my future。I read some of it but haven't finished, so my rating is probably unfair。 I mostly used the app to check in as my daughter hit new leaps, which was enlightening, though the calendar is hard to decipher (at least at first)。 I started this with my second child and life got in the way, plus I knew better what I was doing, so I didn't finish and don't remember where I stopped。 。。。more

Did not finish。 Can not finish。1 - Who edited this book? It is difficult to read。 It feels like it was written in another language and poorly translated into English。2 - I do not agree with the content, and it has been discredited。 “Welcome to leap three! Is your baby fussy? Maybe not? Hungrier? Less of an appetite? Well no matter what, it is a leap。 Meditate。 Be nice to your baby。” Very helpful。 Thanks。

I’ve enjoyed this book and it really helped me understand what my son was going through and how to deal with it。 However I didn’t like how it was filled with quotes from parents, I skipped most of them。 Some info in the sleep chapter I felt was just getting repetitive as well。 Overall, I would recommend it to new parents as a good guide to follow with

Especially helpful in the first year, when everything is so puzzling。 Gives great insights and suggestions for what the heck is going on with your baby amd how to survive it more or less intact。 I've been recommending it to others ever since I found it。 Especially helpful in the first year, when everything is so puzzling。 Gives great insights and suggestions for what the heck is going on with your baby amd how to survive it more or less intact。 I've been recommending it to others ever since I found it。 。。。more

This book was recommended by a few people and we were a bit disappointed in it。 I think at its core it’s a helpful overview of the changes to expect and what age。 However we found ourselves looking for leap signs all the time rather than just assuming our daughter had a bad day。 Even with the dreaded leap 4, we never really saw a clear cluster of days where she was showing signs and if we hadn’t read the book I think we wouldn’t have noticed anything at all besides the mental growth she did。 So This book was recommended by a few people and we were a bit disappointed in it。 I think at its core it’s a helpful overview of the changes to expect and what age。 However we found ourselves looking for leap signs all the time rather than just assuming our daughter had a bad day。 Even with the dreaded leap 4, we never really saw a clear cluster of days where she was showing signs and if we hadn’t read the book I think we wouldn’t have noticed anything at all besides the mental growth she did。 So to a degree I think this book encourages you to look for things that might also not be there。 On the other hand, I can imagine that if they are there with your kid, it’s comforting to know what is happening。 A second big comment I’d have is that the chapters are very repetitive。 For example, apart from a fe changes, the list of signs is pretty much the same for all leaps。 A list of the things to look for like they worked with in leap 10 rather than also providing a repetitive explanation in all of the previous chapters would have made for better digestion of the book。 All in all, I’d recommend a read, because the helpful parts still outweigh the problems with it。 。。。more

Cathleen

Informative on some beginning and factual descriptions about the leaps but too many fillers on other parents’ experiences so I just skip on those。

Purchased this as research for a nannying job。 It gave great insight on what to expect the first year of parenthood in regards to the baby’s developing brain/senses, but it was excruciatingly repetitive。 I can see why they did this if I were a stressed and overtired new mom, perhaps, but even still it was overkill in redundancy。 I did learn a lot though and was encouraged to look at the frustrations of newborn parenthood through the baby’s eyes instead of my adult ones, and that was enlightening Purchased this as research for a nannying job。 It gave great insight on what to expect the first year of parenthood in regards to the baby’s developing brain/senses, but it was excruciatingly repetitive。 I can see why they did this if I were a stressed and overtired new mom, perhaps, but even still it was overkill in redundancy。 I did learn a lot though and was encouraged to look at the frustrations of newborn parenthood through the baby’s eyes instead of my adult ones, and that was enlightening。 。。。more

When our daughter was first born, my husband downloaded the Wonder Weeks app, and I followed along reading the book。 I found it especially useful in the early months; when she continued to be fussy or inconsolable even after trying all of our tricks, knowing that she was going through a "leap" and it would end in ___# of days really helped our sanity。Due to having a new child, I didn't always read the chapters as they were happening, but I still found the info useful - being able to distinguish When our daughter was first born, my husband downloaded the Wonder Weeks app, and I followed along reading the book。 I found it especially useful in the early months; when she continued to be fussy or inconsolable even after trying all of our tricks, knowing that she was going through a "leap" and it would end in ___# of days really helped our sanity。Due to having a new child, I didn't always read the chapters as they were happening, but I still found the info useful - being able to distinguish the changes we have seen in our daughter's development。 As other reviewers have pointed out, this book is quite repetitive from chapter to chapter, and there is an excessive amount of anecdotes from parents, only some of which were interesting or useful。 I did read the book from cover to cover, but it's definitely not necessary - it'd be just as useful to scan through the areas of interest, and you won't lose anything by not reading the million anecdotes (though it was a good reminder that even children of the exact same ages develop very differently)。 。。。more

3。5 ⭐ - it was a good book, especially in our early weeks of parenthood, to help you better understand baby's development。 I only wish they had gone into more detail about their research findings。 It also gets very repetitive。 It is a good gift for soon to be or brand new parents though。 3。5 ⭐ - it was a good book, especially in our early weeks of parenthood, to help you better understand baby's development。 I only wish they had gone into more detail about their research findings。 It also gets very repetitive。 It is a good gift for soon to be or brand new parents though。 。。。more

I started this book when my son was just over 3 months old and it was so insightful and spot on to all of the developmentally milestones that he hit。 It is strange to think there are “no more leaps” so to speak 。。。。 I wish this book covered more ages。 Regardless it is one I will always recommend and I am glad that I have!

Muy buen libro leído durante el primer año y medio de mi hijo。 Muy atinado a los cambios que el iba experimentando。 Siempre leerlo con el precepto de que cada niño es un mundo diferente y tiene sus propios ritmos。

I m reading it chapter by chapter as my son grows up。。。 We are at leap 4 , and I d already like to leave a review。+) I m very happy I m reading this book, as it helps reframes the difficult days into "he is growing" day。 And you get to make some sense out of the chaos of "why oh why, this was finally getting a little less hard, why is it so tough again?"。 That surely does a lot of good! 3。5 stars。 I got this because I generally like to have a book instead of a phone app, but I think in this case the phone app would have been just fine。 All of the extra “anecdotes” from “real” people got to be excessive and quite frankly I doubted their authenticity lol。 But the actual meat of the book was invaluable。

“Why is my kid acting like this?” always lined up with “Now entering Leap ____!” Super useful guide to help make the first two years make a little more sense。
